The Legislature will hold a second round of Interim Committee Meetings this week. Education related Committees and Subcommittees will receive overviews on educator professional development, the state system of school improvement, teacher compensation, and the FDOE’s Legislative Budget Request (LBR). Other Committees will consider a few bills of interest, including bills relating to public records, sales tax, facilities, and career education. The full schedule of education related meetings this week is available below.
In addition to these legislative meetings, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Public Safety Commission will be meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 15-16, at the Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate, 1500 Masters Blvd, Championsgate, Florida 33896. The main business for this two-day meeting is for the Commission to review their proposed findings and recommendations. The agenda for the meeting is available HERE.
Also, the FDOE will continue its Florida Standards Listening Tour this week seeking public input on the revision of the Florida Standards. This week’s meetings will be held from 5:30-6:30 pm local time at the following dates and locations:

Monday – October 14, 2019
The Senate Education Committee will meet, 2:30 – 4:00 pm, for an overview of educator professional development.
The Senate Governmental Oversight & Accountability Committee will meet, 2:30 – 4:00 pm, to consider the following items and others:
SB 162 – Public Records by Perry
Requiring a court to assess the reasonable costs of enforcement against an agency upon the court’s determination in an action for a declaratory judgment that certain records are not subject to a public records exemption, etc.
SB 246 – Public Construction by Hooper
Revising the amount of retainage that certain local governmental entities and contractors may withhold from progress payments for any construction services contract, etc.
Tuesday – October 15, 2019
The Senate Commerce & Tourism Committee will meet, 9:00 – 10:30 am, to consider the following items and others:
SB 130 – Florida Job Growth Grant Fund by Hutson
Authorizing the Governor to approve workforce training grants to certain charter schools under the Florida Job Growth Grant Fund; authorizing certain charter schools to apply for specified grant funds, etc.
SB 126 – Sales & Use Tax by Gruters
Revising the definition of the term “retail sale”; renaming the term “mail order sale” to “remote sale” and revising the definition; revising conditions under which certain dealers are subject to sales tax levies and collection, etc.
Wednesday – October 16, 2019
The Senate Education Appropriations Subcommittee will meet, 1:30 – 3:00 pm, to receive presentations on FY 2020-2021 Legislative Budget Requests.
The House PreK-12 Innovation Subcommittee will meet, 3:00 – 5:00 pm, to receive a presentation on the system of school improvement.
Thursday – October 17, 2019
The House PreK-12 Appropriations Subcommittee will meet, 9:30 – 11:30 am, to receive a presentation on Florida classroom teacher compensation and to conduct a budget exercise.
