It was wonderful to see so many of you in Tallahassee last week for FSBA Day in the Legislature! Thank you for
being such wonderful advocates for our students especially during Children’s Week in the Florida Capitol!
This was also the week that the first proposed education budgets were announced in the Senate Appropriations
Subcommittee on Education and in the House PreK-12 Appropriations Subcommittee.
HERE you will find the legislative bill tracker supplied to us by our team at GrayRobinson. All of the bills we are
tracking are listed on the report in numerical order. A few of the bills to highlight:
- HB 1193 Student Assessments by Rep. Plasencia was heard in House Early Learning and Elementary
Education committee, its first committee stop. Several amendments were made to the bill including one that
would adjust the grading mechanism for our schools. The bill passed out of committee on a 12-4 vote. The
bill next moves to the House Secondary Education & Career Development Subcommittee. - HB 1421 School Safety by Rep. Hawkins was heard in its second committee of reference with only minor
adjustments made to the bill. The bill passed unanimously out of House Secondary Education & Career
Development Subcommittee. - HB 899 Mental Health of Students by Rep. Hunschofsky continues to move through committee unanimously.
This bill revises the data to be analyzed around involuntary examinations as well as require charter schools
to report the same data on involuntary examinations as traditional public schools. The companion bill SB
1240 by Sen. Harrell has passed out of its first two committees unanimously. - HB 1467 K-12 Education by Rep. Garrison was heard in the House Appropriations Committee this week. I
spoke in opposition to the bill at the committee meeting on behalf of FSBA and shared our concerns around
the proposed changes to school board member salaries. It passed out of committee on a 15-10 vote. The bill
now moves to the House floor where it will be heard on 2nd reading on Wednesday 2/9/22.
