Some Florida school district elected officials are joining the push by parent and teacher groups asking Gov. Rick Scott to kill SB 850, which lawmakers sent to him late last week.
The bill does many things, such as requiring school districts to create collegiate high schools with their local colleges. But the lines that have riled up the opposition, added at the end of the legislative session after committees vetted the proposal, would expand the scope of Florida’s tax-credit scholarship program, referred to by many as vouchers. Many more students would be eligible under the changes.
On Monday, Pasco School Board chairwoman Alison Crumbley emailed the governor, urging him to veto the bill.
“One of my main concerns with SB 850 is the diversion of tax dollars and the enormous negative impact the bill will have on children’s services in the state of Florida,” Crumbley wrote.
