Local school districts have asked Rep. Debbie Mayfield, R-Vero Beach, to work on legislation to change the requirement that schools can’t open any earlier than 14 days before Labor Day.
With Labor Day happening late this year on Sept. 7, schools wouldn’t start until at least Aug. 24, making it the latest school year start since the rule was put into place in 2007. That’s a week later than the first day of school in all three Treasure Coast counties in 2014.
Mayfield’s bill, which she hasn’t filed yet, allows schools to start after the second Monday of August, which falls on Aug. 10 this year. She said the change gives districts more flexibility to start classes and finish teaching their curricula before the winter break.
