TALLAHASSEE — National and state advocates are pushing new legislation that would require suicide prevention training for public school teachers after a similar law was repealed as part of Gov. Rick Scott’s 2011 budget cuts.
This week, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the Florida Suicide Prevention Coalition plan to hold a vigil at Florida State University for people who have committed suicide and a lobby day at the Capitol. Advocates will meet with legislators to gather support for SB 884 and HB 907, identical bills that would direct the state Department of Education to incorporate two hours of suicide prevention training into existing professional development requirements for teachers and administrators.
