There is a problem in Florida classrooms and it starts with a lack of teachers. In Walton, Santa Rosa and Okaloosa counties, school officials are turning to year round recruiting and hiring and other innovative ways to attract the brightest and the best.
According to the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE), for the 2015 to 2016 school year, there was a critical shortage of teachers in English, exceptional student education (ESE), reading, foreign languages, English for speakers of other languages (ESOL), science and math. That means a significant amount of teachers are being hired to teach courses without the appropriate certification, there are significant vacancies in the districts or colleges aren’t producing enough graduates to meet statewide needs.
