This week, the Legislature will hold the first of six weeks of Interim Committee Meetings in preparation for the regular 2020 Legislative Session on January 14, 2020. This first round of meetings will focus on a review of the state’s financial outlook and the Legislative Budget Requests (LBRs) submitted by state agencies, updates on the implementation of key legislation passed during the 2019 Session, and examination of issues that have arisen since the last session and are likely to be the subject of legislation in the 2020 Session. Meetings of particular interest this week include the Senate Education Committee receiving an update on K-12 School Safety and Security Issues (Monday), the House PreK-12 Innovation Subcommittee hearing presentations by FHSAA and FSBA on health concerns for student athletes (Wednesday), and the House PreK-12 Appropriations Subcommittee hearing presentations on FY 2020-2021 Legislative Budget Requests by the FDOE and the Office of Early Learning (Thursday). The full schedule of education related meetings this week is available below (or click HERE to access on the FSBA website).
The Legislature has also made some changes to its committees. The Senate has added the Infrastructure & Security Committee tasked with bringing a better understanding of the various factors that lead to mass shootings and other acts of violence. The House has eliminated the PreK-12 Quality Subcommittee and transferred some its responsibilities to the full Education Committee and the PreK-12 Innovation Subcommittee. These changes, post-session special elections, and other factors have caused some realignment in the membership of education related committees and subcommittees. We have updated our education committee/subcommittee contact lists and legislative delegation chart to reflect these changes. These lists, our current bill tracking list, information on the FDOE Legislative Budget Request, and other new information has been posted on our updated 2020 Legislative Session page
