The size, shape, number and even the politics of Florida’s school districts could change dramatically if voters support a constitutional amendment proposed by two South Florida lawmakers.
Sen. Jeff Brandes and state Rep. Matt Caldwell introduced legislation that would empower the Legislature to abolish existing school districts. It also would present the opportunity to create school districts in “any contiguous area of the state.” That could lead to formation of several school districts within a single county, school districts that cross county lines or school districts that encompass more than one county.
Laws on the books already allow voters in two or more contiguous counties to approve the consolidation of school districts.
