Langford, who retired last school year after 40 years of teaching in Polk, used to design her own curriculum, pacing and lessons. But the Polk County School District has increasingly tightened its grip on the curriculum and pacing it wants teachers to use — a major complaint that teachers have cited in recent protests and interviews — to help move through the state standards in time to be ready for the state standardized tests.
